One of the most famous mountains in China, Huangshan (Yellow Mountain, Mt. Huang) is located in the southern part of Anhui Province. Measuring 1,865 m (6,120 ft) in height and occupying 1,200 sq. km (463 sq. ml) in area, the mountain is a popular scenic attraction known for its magnificent peaks, pinetrees, rolling clouds, and warm spings. Over the centuries, numerous talented Chinese who toured the mountain left behind a large body of poems and inscriptions. Also, historically Huangshan was a sacred mountain in the Daoist tradition, and today many Daoist temples scatter in the mountains. The art and the religious tradition developed in the region have further enhanced the importance of Huangshan, which the UNESCO lists as a world heritage site for both natural beauty and cultural signficance. |
