Shanghai Maglev Train was a high-speed train that utilizes the most advanced rail transportation technology up to date. It is the world’s only train line of its kind that is in business operation. Designed and constructed by Chinese and Germany, the train line was built partly to test new technology, which the Chinese government intends to put to use on a larger scale in China. The train track currently in existence extends from Shanghai International Airport to Longyang Road Station on Line 2 of the subway system in Shanghai. The total length of the rail track is 30 km (18.6 m), which the maglev train covers in about 7 minutes, running at its normal speed of over 400 km (260 m) per hour.
The Shanghai Maglev Train Line was completed in 2002 and went into full operation in early 2003.
A ride on Shanghai Maglev Train costs about 50 Chinese dollars (approaximately US$7.00). |
