U.S. Companies Invest in China
According to statistics for the year 2001, released by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, for the third year in a roll the United States leads all countries in foreign investment in China.
American companies have so far poured money into a total of 33,000 ventures in China, with $67.8 billion under contracts and $35 billion actually invested. The projects spread across a broad field of businesses, including manufacturing, oil, textiles, pharmaceutics, biochemical industry, agriculture, finance and insurance, communications, automobile, and environmental industry. Over 300 of the Fortune 500 companies are among those that have established presence in China. Coca Cola, for instance, has now claimed one-fourth of China¡¯s soft drinks market, and Kodak has in China its largest population of foreign customers. The biggest of American corporations, Walmart, had 17 stores in operation across China at the end of 2001, and the number is expected to grow quickly.
Yes, McDonald¡¯s, KFC, Hard Rock and Starbucks are all there too. And T.G.I. Friday's.
