Destination China
China may become the world's number one tour destination in year 2020. This according to a World Tourism Organization official who was in China for World Tourism Day earlier this year.
Currently China ranks number five on the list of countries visited by most foreign tourists. In 2001 over 33 million foreign sightseeing guests toured China, which marks an increase of 6.2%. Additionally, over 13 million foreign tourists visited Hong Kong in year 2001, an increase of 5.1%. With these figures combined, China takes the number three spot on the most-frequented country list, trailing behind France and Spain only.
In year 2001, numbers of tourists to Italy, Great Britain and the United States dropped by 5.3%, 7.4% and 10.6% respectively, partly due to the effects of the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on Sept. 11. Numbers of sightseers who spent time in Spain and France increased by 1.2% and 3.4% respectively. Back to China Notes and News
