China's Most Celebrated Mountains

Ten mountains were named the "Most Celebrated" in a recent popular poll conducted in China. On the list are Mt. Tai, Yellow Mountains, Emei Mountains, Mt. Lu, Himalayan Mountains, Changbai Mountains, Mt. Hua, Wuyi Mountains, Mt. Yu, and Wutai Mountains.

Located in Shangdong Province, Mt. Tai was rich in historical heritage, as evidenced by the numerous monuments and inscriptions that decorate the mountain. In particular historically Mt. Tai was the site where Chinese emperors practiced the solemn ceremonies of making offerings to Heaven.

Yellow Mountains of Anhui Province are known for towering peaks and seas of clouds that remarkably enhance the beauty of the landscape.

Situated outside Chengdu in Sichuan Province, Emei is both known for its natural beauty and its historically important Buddhist sacred site.

The fame of Mt. Lu as a summer resort emerged in the late 19th and early 20th century when some affluent Westerners in China started to build luxurious villas in the region, which were later utilized by top Chinese leaders.

The Himalayans, of course, are among the tallest mountains in the world.

Forming the natural border between China and Korea, the well-forested Changbai Mountains retains much of its pristine splendor.

Mt. Hua is situated about 80 miles outside the city of Xian in Shaaxi Province. Just a few miles lengthwise and across, Mt. Hua is extraordinary in that at places it goes up almost vertically, making quite an astonishing sight.

Located in Fujian Province, Wuyi is a major summer resort and tourist attraction of South China.

Mt. Yu is the highest point on the island of Taiwan.

Located in Shanxi Province, the Wutai are the home of some ancient Buddhist temples.
