Hong Kong Tourism Rebounds
Hong Kong tourism has recovered from the SARS scare of last summer, statistics from Hong Kong Tourism Board indicate. In February this year, a total of 1.45 million people visited the city, an increase of 3.3% from the same period a year before. Numbers of visitors from three major international markets - Europe-Africa-Middle East, Oceania, and the Americas -increased by 17%, 12.8% and 9.2% respectively, and the number of visitors from mainland China increased by 15.6%.
Also in February, hotel occupancy rate in Hong Kong reached 81%, comparable to the pre-SARS level in the same period last year. Average per-room rate rose by 2.5%, to 691 Hong Kong dollars (approximately US$88).
In 2003, a total of 15.50 million people visited Hong Kong, which is the second largest number ever in the history of the free port and tourist city. Back to China Notes and News
