World’s Longest Bridge under Construction
A bridge that spans the vast Hangzhou Bay on the east coast of China is currently under construction. The bridge connects Shanghai, which is located north of Hangzhou Bay, and Ningpo on the southern side of the bay. Measured 22 miles (36 kilometers) in length, this bridge will be the longest yet in the world.
A city of 6 million people, Ningbo has a long and strong tradition of commercial activities. In fact, as early as 1522 some Portuguese sailors and merchants made their way here, opening the region for foreign trade. In the current economic boom of China, Ningbo businessmen once again led the way, and the rising importance of the city – it is now the home of a world-class port - made a shorter link to Shanghai virtually inevitable. When completed, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge will reduce the driving distance between Ningbo and Shanghai by 75 miles (120 kilometers) to 100 miles (160 kilometers). Back to China Notes and News
