More American Students Study in China


The number of American college students who went to study in China increased by a dramatic 90 percent in the 2003-2004 school year - this according to a report recently released by the New York-based Institute of International Education. A total of 4,737 American students studied in China in 2003-2004 while the number for the year before, 2002-2003, was 2,493 U.S. This makes China the 9th most popular study-abroad destination for American students, up from 12th in the previous year. The United Kingdom remains the most often chosen host country, with 32,237 American students studying over there in 2003-2004. Among other leading destinations are Italy, Spain, France and Australia. Numbers of American students who studied in those countries also rose, but only in the range of 5 to 7 percent.

China is the leading host country for Amerian studenst who study in Asia, where over 13,200 American students studied at universities in 2003-2004. Japan follows China as the second most-frequented host country in Asia; in 2003-2004 American students; over 3,700 American colleges studied there.
