Beijing Hotels Are Getting Ready for 2008 Olympic Games

As the opening date of the 2008 Olympic Games draws ever closer, the hospitality industry of Beijing is gearing up for the big challenge. Over 360 hotels have signed agreements with the Beijing Olympic Games Organization Committee to serve the athletes and spectators, and more hotels are currently under construction, some of them designed to be open right before the big event. In 2006, six upscale hotels came into service in Beijing, adding a total of 1,817 guest rooms to the city’s hotel industry. In 2007, 13 new luxurious hotels will open for business, accounting for a total of 4,005 rooms, following by 18 operations with 7,112 rooms in 2008.

In spite of the rapid expansion, hotels are expecting good reservation rates. Anticipating price hikes due to the high demand, the Olympic Organization Committee has set rules regulating hotel rates during the Games: for a room in a five-star hotel, no more 2,960 Chinese dollars ($370) should be charged; for rooms in four-star and three-star hotels, the top rates are 2320 and 1600 Chinese dollars respectively ($290 and $200).
