Record Number of Tourists Visit Tibet
According to statistics released by the Tourism Administration Bureau of Tibet, a record number of tourists visited Tibet in the first five months of 2007.
From January to May, 2007, a total of 672,540 travelers toured Tibet. This marks an significant increase of 82.8% over the same period in the previous year. The number of foreign tourists who visited Tibet rose by 63.5%.
One apparent reason for the notable increase of tourists in Tibet is the 2006 launching of passenger train service that connects the remote Lhasa to China proper. In addition to Lhasa, which has always been the focus of tourism in Tibet, other cities and towns, among them Nyingkhri, Gzhiskartse and Damxung, as well as a number of ancient trade routes, are draw more and more attention.
