New Beijing Southern Railway Station Set to Open in June 2008
In June 2008, a new railway station, Beijing Southern Railway Station, will start to serve travelers in and out of China’s national capital.
The new Beijing Southern Railway Station is a major transportation hub where travelers can easily make connections among trains and other means of transport such as subway, light rail, city buses, and cabs. Upon its completion, the new station will occupy a total of 500,000 square meters (598,000 square yards). It contains waiting rooms and platforms that can accommodate over 10,000 passengers at any given moment, and sees off a train every three minutes. High-speed passenger trains from major cities such as Shanghai and Tianjin will arrive and depart here, as well as trains that serve the Beijing metropolitan area.
The new Beijing Southern station utilizes many new technologies in its design and service, which should make it convenient for travelers in China who often find it a hassle to board trains. At the new Beijing Southern Railway Station, for instance, there will be 67 escalators and 36 elevators. Also, unlike many other railway stations in China, which are surrounded by crowded city streets, the new Beijing Southern Railway Station are serviced by well-patterned freeways, which facilitates accesses to the station.
Beijing Southern Railway Station is seven kilometer south of the city center of Beijing. The old station at the same site used to be known as Yongdingmen Station. When the new station comes into service in summer 2008, there will be five major railway stations in China’s national capital: Beijing Railway Station (Beijing Zhan), Beijing Western Railway Station (Beijing Xi Zhan), Beijing Northern Railway Station (Beijing Bei Zhan), Beijing Eastern Railway Station (Beijing Dong Zhan), and Beijing Southern Railway Station (Beijing Nan Zhan). Trains to different destinations depart and arrive at different stations.
