Bridge linking Shanghai and Ningbo ready for traffic
Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the world’s longest cross-sea bridge, will soon open for traffic. The bridge spans over the mouth of Qiantang River and connections Ningbo on the southern side of the bay to Shanghai, which is located north of the river mouth.
The construction of Hangzhou Bay Bridge started in 2003. Taking the shape of the letter “S”, the bridge measures 36 km (22.37 m) in length and allows six lanes of traffic. Coming with a price tag of US$1.64 billion, the bridge is designed to be in service for 100 years.
With the completion Hangzhou Bay Bridge, the travel distance between Ningbo and Shanghai, both major economic centers on the coast of China, is shortened by 120 km (75 m). The bridge is also expected to become a tourist attraction. A viewing platform was constructed as part of the bridge, which is located 14 km off the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay.
