Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Do I need any immunizations to be allowed to visit China?

A: Visitors who are traveling from regions infected by yellow-fever should have certificate for vaccination. Other than that, China does not have particular vaccination requirements for travelers to enter China. It is recommended that visitors bring international certificate for vaccination, which may be useful at the customs.

Travelers from North America should have their standard vaccination, and the U.S. government also recommends that visitors to China get vaccinated for certain diseases before traveling to China if they have not done so. Of particular interests is the vaccination for hepatitis A (or immune globulin) and hepatitis B; and the vaccination for typhoid and rabies if one is to travel to rural areas. If one is taking medicine on a regular basis, he should bring his medicine as it may be difficult to find exactly the same medicine in China (the names alone can be confusing). It is also a good idea to bring along anti-diarrhea medicine (over-counter) and anti-malaria medicine (if one travels to a malaria-risk region). Travelers should consult their doctors and can also get related information at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

While in China, travelers should not drink directly from taps; drink only boiled water or bottle water.
