Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: May I know what is the currency used in Macau & Shenzhen? Is HK dollar acceptable in Shenzen, and vice versa?

A: While the official currency of Macau is the pataca (MOP$), Hong Kong dollars are widely used in Macau. In fact, more Hong Kong money is in circulation in Macau than Macau's own pataca. Currently (Feb. 2008), HK$1.00 equals MOP$1.01.

Many businesses in Shenzhen accept Hong Kong dollars in the place of Chinese currency. The two currencies used to be pegged at roughly 1:1, which made transactions easy. The Hong Kong dollar, however, has recently devaluated relative to the Chinese dollar (yuan). As of Feb. 2008, the exchange rate is 1.00 Hong Kong dollar for 0.92 Chinese dollar. One can always convert Hong Kong dollars into Chinese dollars at various banks if one so desires.

Many businesses in Macau take Chinese currency. It is also easy to convert Chinese dollars into Macau money.

One can also use credit cards in Macau and Shenzhen. But do not expect small businesses to take the cards, especially in Shenzhen.
