Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Does China have a president?

A: Yes. China has a president. Currently, Mr. Hu Jintao is the head of the state in the People's Republic of China. Hu Jintao is also the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, which is the ruling party in China. Theoretically, China's president is elected by the National People's Congress of China. Currently a meeting of the National People's Congress is under way in Beijing, and it is expected that Hu will be reelected as the President of P. R. China. He will serve another term of five years and, at the end of that term, he is expected to step down.

Below the President of China there is the Premier of the State Council, which manages the daily business of the Chinese government. The premier is nominated by the President, whose appointment must be approved by the National People's Congress. Mr. Wen Jiabao is currently the Premier of China. He is expected to be renominated and approved to serve as Premier for another term of fives. Hu and Wen have been President and Premier for one term of five years. They're expected to hold their respective offices for a total of two terms (ten years).

The President and Premier head executive branch of the government in China. The legislative branch of the government, the National People's Congress, is chaired by Mr. Wu Bangguo.

There is also a judicial branch of the Chinese government, the head of which is not as important as the three mentioned above.

In spite of the increasing openness in China in recently years, the Chinese Communist Party still largely controls Chinese politics. Theoretically members of the National People's Congress are elected, but the Communist Party mostly dominates the elections. Hu Jintao is the General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, as mentioned above. Wen Jiabao and Wu Bangguo are members of the Standing Committee in the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party.
