Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I would like to know the time and price of traveling by train from Hongkong to shantou. thank you.
| | A: There is no direct train between Hong Kong and Shantou. You can travel to Shenzhen first and then catch a train in Shenzhen that goes to Shantou. Shenzhen is just across border from Hong Kong, by way of Lo Wu (Luo Hu) border cross. There is one train that departs from Shenzhen around 3:00 pm and arrives in Shantou before midnight. Travel time is over 8 hours.
There are also Shantou-bound trains that depart from Guangzhou (Guangzhou East Railway Station, not Guangzhou Railway Station). One train leaves early in the morning and another departs in the afternoon. Guangzhou is about two hours from Hong Kong and can be reached by train or bus.
On Chinese trains there are hard seats, soft seats, hard sleeping berths, and soft sleep berths. If you travel long distance, it is suggested that you get sleeping berths. Soft sleeping berths has a little more privacy, with four passengers to one self-enclosed cabin. Train tickets are relatively inexpensive (compared to plane tickes, for isntance). Tickets, however, may be hard to come by, particularly during holliday season. This has to be taken into consideration, especially if you have to make connections. You may find youself stranded in a city if you do not get the tickets to travel on. Train tickets can be purchased a few days in advance, but generally they are sold only in cities where particular trains depart or stop.
There is air link between Hong Kong and Shantou, so one can also fly from Hong Kong to Shantou. Flight time is aobut an hour. Long distance coach is another option.
