Q: My grandmother would like to return to Meixian to trace her Hakka roots. What is the nearest airport to Meixian (Is it Guangzhou?). If the nearest airport is Guangzhou, how far is Meixian from Guangzhou and how do we get there? After that I would like to go to Xiamen. Which is recommended? Bus or train and how much does it cost? | | A: There is a Meizhou Airport. Administratively Meixian is part of Meizhou City. China Southern Airlines operate flights from Hong Kong to Meizhou and flights from Guangzhou to Meizhou. Services are on some of the days out of a week (five days for flights between Guangzhou and Meizhou, and two days for flights between Hong Kong and Meizhou).
There is also rail link between Guangzhou and Meizhou. The train ride from Guangzhou (Guangzhou Dong - Guangzhou East Railway Station) to Meizhou lasts about 6 hours).
Meizhou is located between Guangzhou and Xiamen. So, from Guangzhou you go northeast to Meizhou, and then go farther northeast to Xiamen. One of the trains that goes from Guangzhou to Meizhou continues on to Xiamen. When it's time for you to go to Xiamen, you can go by this train. Train ride time between Meizhou and Xiamen is about eight hours. This particular train seems to be a night train, leaving Meizhou at midnight and arrive in Xiamen early in the morning; so you need to get a sleeping berth to travel comfortably.
By highway the distance between Guangzhou and Meizhou is about 400 km. There are long distance bus services between the two destinations. Travel time is about four hours. You can, if you want to, travel by bus from Meizhou to Xiamen.
A plane ticket from Guangzhou to Meizhou may cost about 500 Chinese dollars. Train travel cost less (150 Chinese dollars for a sleeping berth). And a bus ticket slight less than the train ticket.
