Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Please, can you tell me the distance between Shanghai and Nanjing? Many thanks.

A: Shanghai and Nanjing are close to each other. By rail the distance between the two cities is approximately 300 km (190 ml). Depending on which train you travel, it takes anywhere from a little over two hours to 5 hours to get from Shanghai to Nanjing. There are many trains that connect the two cities. One can also travel by long distance bus. Travel time is up to four hours. Both Nanjing and Shanghai are on the Yangzi River (Yangtze River), Nanjing being located upstream and Shanghai at the place where the Yangzi empties into East China Sea. "Shanghai" literally means "above the sea" whereas "Nanjing" means "Southern Capital" - historically Nanjing served as the capital of China for a number of (smaller) dynasties. Nanjing is currently the capital city of Jiangsu Province. Shanghai is an independent municipality.
