Q: What is the current situation with the Three Gorges?

A: The Three Gorges Project - the construction of the world's largest reservoir - is in its third phase right now. With the completion of the project's second phase in 2003, water was stored in the resevoir, raising water level by about 180 feet. The 3rd stage of the project is scheduled to be completed in 2009, when water level will go further up, by another 120 feet or so. The rise of water level alters but does not obliterate the view that is the Three Gorges, as the peaks that form the gorges originally rose up 1300 to 2000 feet above river surface. And of course downstream now there is the world's biggest dam to behold.
