Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: How is "Qin" pronounced? Thank you!!
| | A: Qin, which is a Chinese character romanized in the current Pinyin system, used to be Ch'in in the older Wade-Giles system. It is written like this, and it is pronounced like this.
Compared to other long-lasting dynasties in Chinese history, Qin ((221 BC - 207 BC) was short-lived. But this was the dynasty that for first time truly centralized the Chinese state; prior to the Qin rule, there had been "emperors" in China, but those monarchs presided over a system loosely held together. The first emperor of the Qin dynasty (Qin Shi Huang - "Qin Beginning Emperor") is of course known for his underground army of terra-cotta warriors, which constituted part of his mausoleum, located outside the city of Xian.
