Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Could you tell me about transportation from Chengdu to Emei and Chengdu to Qingcheng? What about staying over night at Emei and Qingcheng?

A: If you're adventurous and can deal with uncertainties in a country whose language you don't speak, you can tour the destinations on your own. Emei is 160 kilometers (100 miles) southwest of Chengdu. A freeway links the two destinations and there are bus services. Some buses depart Xin Nanmen (New Southern Gate) and Ximen (Western Gate) bus stations in Chengdu, about every thirty minutes. Take one with air-conditioning. The ride lasts about two hours and costs about 40 yuan.

At Emei there are local buses run by park management to take tourists up the mountain. There is also a lift that send visitors to Jinding (Golden Summit). Jinding Hotel on the summit is a two-star facility. A room costs about $20-$50. There are cheaper rooms, which are mostly for native tourists.

Watch out for the monkeys. Don't fight them.

Emei is about 20 miles away from Leshan, another well-known tour destination, where the Leshan Great Buddha is located.

Qingcheng Mountain is 66 kilometers (41 miles) from Chengdu, 16 km (10 miles) south of Dujiangyan. Buses depart from Ximen (Western Gate) in Chengdu for Dujiangyan/Qingcheng every ten minutes or so. Once at the mountain one can take cablecar to go up. There are a number of hotels where one can stay: Hexiang Shanzhuang (four star), Qingqingyuan Binguan (four star), Chengtie Qingcheng Shanzhuang (two star), Chengfei Qingcheng Shanzhuang (two star). Qingcheng Shan sites are grouped into Qian Shan (Mountain Front) and Hou Shan (Mountain Back).

As mentioned, Qingcheng Mountain is 10 miles or so from Dujiangyan, which is the site of an irrigation facility built over two thousand years ago.
