Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I am traveling with a friend to Bejing and staying for the first two weeks of October. What is appropriate clothing for the clmate and customs?

A: It starts to cool down in Beijing in October. Average high temperature should be around 20 C (70 F) and average low 5 C (40 F). Autumn is considered better time in Beijing - it is no longer that hot, air is clearer (relatively speaking - it's not that clear in any season nowadays), and it does not rain that much in Beijing.

The Chinese are not very particular when it comes to clothing. The important thing is not to dress provocatively. You'll find some Chinese, especially girls, dress rather aggressively, but of course foreign visitors do not go there to compete with them in that department. Westerners stand out anyway, so why call for more (unwanted) attention. But really the Chinese do not care that much and the line between formal and informal is somewhat vague. Jeans, sneakers and T-shirts and long-shorts are all right for women on informal occasions, especially while on the road or touring. If you meet with people, try avoid open-toe sandals, short-skirts (above knee) or other kinds of over-revealing clothes. Short sleeves are all right. No need for high heels if you don't like them. Clothes fitting for an office setting in the U.S. is formal enough. I doubt there will be many highly formal occasions - unless you're attending some conferences or meeting with government officials, etc.; even then there is no need to be fancy; business-like would do. So no need to bring a whole lot with you.
