Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: On a trip in China I'll have an opportunity stop over for a day in Shenyang, Liaoning. What should I go see while there?
| | A: Shenyang was the capital of the Qing Dynasty before the Manchu moved south of the Great Wall and conquered China. There still stands a imperial palace which resembles the palace in Beijing but is smaller is scale. One will notice, for instance, in the palace there are pavillions for "eight banners." That reflects on the time when the Manchu were divided into eight tribes.
Around Shenyang there are a few mauseleum for the early monarchs of the Qing dynasty - Zhao Ling, Yong Ling and Fuling. Fuling (Mauseleum of Good Fortune) was built in the 17th century for the founder of the Qing Dynasty Nurhachi and his wife. It was located just a few miles northest of Shenyang.
In the Mao era, Sheyang was one of the most important industrial cities of China. If you're on a business trip, that may be of interest to you. If you travel in winter time, there are opportunities for activities.on ice and snow.
