Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: What can we expect of the weather in May? We plan on going to Beijing, Xian, Yangtze River cruise, Gullin, and Hong Kong? Would October really be a much better time to go?

A: Both May and October are good times to travel in China. It is not too hot nor too cold, and it is generally dry and clear. They say fall is best to travel in China, especially North China. Compared to May, however, the difference is not as big as, say, the difference when compared to August, when it is hot and humid.

In Beijing, for instance, average high and temperatures in May are 55 F to 80 F; in October they are 45 and 80s. In Shanghai during the same periods, 60 to 80, and 55 to 75. In Hong Kong it is warmer and more humid. The average highs and lows in May and October are approximately 75 and 85. We're talking about average highs and lows here; occasionally temperature does go high as 90. Still, it is generally cooler than June through September.

In May, average rainfall in Beijing is an average of 1.5 inch; in Shanghai, 4.5 inch; in Hong Kong, 11 inch. Numbers for October are half of those for May. They're all smaller than numbers for the months in between.

You may not want to travel in the first week in May or the first week of October, however. This has nothing to do with weather but with the fact that May First and October First are two big holidays for the Chinese, who get seven days off on each occasion.
