Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I would like to go by train from Nanning, Guangxi Province, to Hanoi, Vietnam. How can I make a reservation? Can I make a reservation via Internet?
| | A: If you're going to stay at a hotel in Nanning, you may want to contact them before hand to see if they can make a reservation for you. Many Chinese hotels make train-ticket reservations for their guests, for a fee (about 30 yuan - just a few dollars). Chinese train tickets cannot be booked directly online. The Guangxi branch of China International Travel Service offers online train reservation help; cannot vouch for them, but you may want to check them: oytour@citsgx.com. They have a train reservation web page here, but it is in Chinese: http://www.citsgx.com/Order_Station.asp.
The train that goes from Nanning to Hanoi runs only twice a week, and booking must be made one week in advance. Normally a passport is needed for the booking, at least for Chinese natives. You may want to ask about this if you want to book through your hotel or some other agent. If you have local contacts in Nanning, you of course can enlist their help. The leaves in the evening and arrive in Hanoi around noon time the next day. A soft-berth ticket costs about 380 yuan (about US$50).
