Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Is it easy to buy a Western style bike in Guilin? If yes, could you please give me the address of any shop? Are there many differences with the chinesse style bikes? Some advice or price range?

A: It is quite convenient to rent a bike in Guilin, and it does it cost a whole - about 15 yuan a day (US$2). So unless you have some other plans (staying a long time, for instance), it makes more sense to rent rather than buy.

If you do want to buy, you should be able to find bicycles at any large department store. One additional advantage to go a large department store is that they tend to have fixed prices and the quality of goods is more dependable. If you go to a small shop, you need to be prepared to bargain. The largest department store in Guilin is Guilin Baihuo Dalou ("Guilin Hundred Goods Building"), which is located at 122 Zhongshan Zhong Lu ("Zhongshan Middle Road"). Another large store is Wang Cheng Shang Sha ("King City Commercial Building"), located at Zheng Yang buxingjie ("Zhengyang pedestrian street").

Biking has become a popular sport for some Chinese in recent years. Many Western tourists have biked in Guilin, so you should be found Western-style bikes there. Here were a few Chinese web pages with some pictures showing the kind of bikes available in China (not specifically in Guilin): http://www.chinabicycle.net/spzs/search.asp?sortid=1.

You could buy a bike for about 300 or 400 yuan. Better ones may cost a thousand yuan (US$100 or so).
