Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: When are the peak seasons for Guilin and Chongqing? Can I take a train or plane between them? What are the costs for each? Is it possible to visit both cities over an eight day period? How far is Chongqing from the Three Georges Dam project? Are there trips to the new dam?
| | A: With no express trains between Guilin and Chongqing, one has to make a connection if one wants to travel by train between these two cities. One can fly, and the flight lasts about one hour.
Eight days is long enough to tour the two destinations. If you plan accordingly, you can get to major attractions in the Guilin region, - one day in and around Guilin and one day doing the Li River cruise.
Chongqing is where most Yangtze cruises begin. It is a four or three day cruise downstream through the Three Gorges, passing the Dam, and with arrival in Wuhan or Yichang. Water level has risen by about 200 feet since the completion of the second phase of the Three Gorges Reservoir, but given that many peaks that make the gorges measure somewhere between 1,300 and 2,000 feet, the view is still rather splendid. As for the dam itself, it is really whether one cares for this kind of things or not. Many cruises do include a tour of the dam as part of their itineraries.
Peak season for these destinations is from April through October.
