Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: Is it compulsory to put on the helmet for biking in China? Are there other legal requirements like reflectant t-shirt, reflectors, lights, etc?
| | A: There is no Chinese law requiring people to put on helmets while riding their bicycles. Same with relflectant t-shirt, reflectors, or lights. Bicycles, however, are supposed to be registered. For most Chinese who ride bicycles, it is a way of transportation rather than a sport or exercise. It is of course a great idea to be cautious and safety-conscious while biking in China or anywhere, especially for a foreigner in China who does not the local conditions or customs as well. It shouldn't take all that long to find out, given that there are so many people on bikes. Just observe carefully and then go with the flow.
