Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I will be in Hong Kong in mid-Nov. Would like to visit Yiwu. Is staying 2 nites in Yiwu sufficient? How best to travel there? Any express coach servcies from Shenzhen to Yiwu and what will be the travelling time plus costs? Info on resonably good hotels appreciated. Thanks.

A: You can fly between Guangzhou and Yiwu. The flight is just an hour or so and costs anywhere from 700 to 1,100 yuan. There seem to be more flights to Yiwu during the Canton Fair. There are also train services between Guangzhou and Yiwu. One train leaves around 3:00 in the afternoon and arrives in Yiwu around noon next day. An one-way soft berth is approximately 550 yuan. You can also go by coach to Yiwu, with a berth on an air-conditioned coach costing about 300 yuan. It's a long ride, however, totalling 1,200 kilometers. On a train there is more space to move around. To get to Guangzhou from Hong Kong you can go by train or coach.

Hotels. Yiwu Kingdom Hotel, 0579-5268888; Yiwu Hotel (4 star), 0579-5559999; Xinlian Hotel (4 star), 0579-5562888; Shangcheng Hotel (3 star), 0579-5458888. Rates range from 200 to 600 yuan.

Yiwu is not a big city. Two days should be enough to get around, assuming of course you have no complex business to take care of and no extensive sight-seeing plans in the region.
