Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I plan to travel to Hong and then to Shantou for visiting. I have an old aged lady travelling with me and therefore I need your advice how to go about this route.

A: You can fly from Hong Kong to Shantou (we assume that's how you get to Hong Kong). China Southern Airlines operate flights between the two cities.

If you don't want to fly, you can go by train. There are both train and bus services between Hong Kong and Guangzhou. For the trip from Guangzhou to Shantou you can book soft berths. This is four berths to a cabin, so it is not as noisy and still provides some space to move aorund. Make sure you get a lower level berth so that your companion does not have to climb up. There are several trains that go from Guangzhou to Shantou; the travel time is about 7 to 8 hours. A soft berth ticket costs about 200 yuan. Tickets can be booked five days in advance. It is not very easy to book train tickets outside China, however.

The trip from Hong Kong to Guangzhou lasts about two hours, by bus or train. Trains departs from Hung Hom stationin Macau and there are buses that go directly from Hong Kong International Airport to various destinations in Guangzhou.
