Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I am flying to Bangkok from Japan. I have to change planes in Bejing. i will only be in the airport with no plans to venture into the city. do i need a chinese visa topick up a connecting flight. I`m coming back the same way, via Bejing. I'm American. thanks.
| | A: These are the relevant regulations:
"Non-U.S. or British citizens to transit China may stay inside the airport (and not going through customs) for less than 24 hours without applying for visas."
"Citizens of the following countries in transit Shanghai can stay in Shanghai for up to 48 hours without applying for visas: Korea, U.S. Canada, Australia, New Zealand, French, Netherlands, France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria and Greece."
Given that your stopover is in Beijing, not Shanghai, and that you're a U.S. citizen, you need to get a transit visa. Contact the Chinese consulate in your region. You may need destination country visa and flight ticket to apply for the transit visa.
