Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Is there a limit on how much currency you can travel with into China and departing China? Are traveler's checks or credit cards easy to use in China?

A: According to Chinese customs regulations, if you bring in more than $5,000, you should declare at the time you enter; otherwise on your way out you may have a problem with the extra money you bring with you. In practice, however, it seems that customs officials rarely check.

Some businesses in China take major credit cards, but definitely it is not as widely used as in the U.S., even in cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. Traveler's checks can be used in China.
