Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: I would like to travel by train from Wuhan to Guilin and then from Shenzhen to Wuhan. How long does it take? Do they travel during the night? How far in advance can I make reservations and buy tickets?

A: There is a train that originates in Wuchang (part of Wuhan) stops in Guilin before it goes on to Zhanjiang on South China coast. The ride last about 13 hours. It travels overnight and gets to Guilin early in the morning. There are trains which originate elsewhere (Beijing, for instace) wtih stops in Wuhan and Guilin which are slightly faster.

There are a couple of trains that travel between Shenzhen and Wuhan. The ride is about 14 hours and a soft berth costs about 400 yuan.

Normally train tickets in China sell five days or so in advance. You probably need to enlist some help in getting them for you.
