Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I am planning to visit Nanning China, but I would like to fly to Hong Kong, then drive to Nanning. First question is, is that possible, second question, how far is Nanning from Hong Kong?
| | A: The distance between Hong Kong and Nanning is about 900 kilometers (600 miles).
It does not seem to be a very practical idea for a foreigner who has not stayed in China for some time to drive around, especially if this includes not only freeway but also local driving. Whereas traffic rules are roughly the same as those in the U.S., the enforcement of these rules is quite another matter. Those who have seen it would tell you that it is just risky for an outsider to get behind the steering wheel without considerable experience. There are quite some drivers who don't follow the rules strictly, and drivers certainly have to share roads with numerous bikers and pedestrians.
Plus, you need to be properly licensed by Chinese authorities to drive in China. Whereas nowadays you can rent cars in China, getting a car into China from Hong Kong is another complicated matter.
If you do want to get around by car in China so that you can enjoy the freedom that moving around in a coach with a group does not provide, you may want to consider hiring a driver/guide and a vehicle; you may find that the cost is not altogether unbearable.
