Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: We're planning on going from Hong Kong to Hainan, traveling along the coast. Which transportation do you recommend when travelling along the coast (cheap yet flexible)? How to book train tickets zhanjiang-guangzhou? Are there 1-2 night boats along the Pearl River leaving and arriving at Guangzhou?

A: There are cruise boats that sail between Hong Kong and Hainan; the cruise should not cost a whole lot. Try Cruise-Ferries in Hong Kong or some company like that.

You can also go by train. There is train service between Guangzhou and Haikou, an overnight ride. A soft berth costs about 200 yuan. There are still no convenient ways to purchase train tickets when they're not part of a packaged tour, however. You may ask people at the hotels you're going stay to see if they can help you.

If you want to go by ship from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and/or back, you can take an overnight steamer or one of these a speedy catamarans. To do the latter, call China Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong (tel: 2375 0537) for information.
