Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Does a Chinese person needs an international passport to go to hong kong?

A: If you're just ethnically Chinese but a foreign citizen (holder of a foreign passport), in most cases you can travel to Hong Kong visa-free for a certain period time (90 days, for instance). If your country is not on the said visa-free list, you need to apply for a visa to enter Hong Kong.

If you're a citizen of P.R China (holder of P.R. China passport) living abroad, to enter Hong Hong you need to apply for a visa (either at a Chinese diplomatic/consular mission or by mail to Hong Kong's Immigration Department). If you're tansiting through Hong Kong, you can stay for up to seven days with no visa. Taiwanese living abroad who plan to travel to Hong Kong should do the same. Taiwanese living in Taiwan should apply for visa to enter Hong Kong from certain airline companies.

Chinese living in China are subject to regulations concerning mainland Chinese traveling to Hong Kong. If you have relatives in Hong Kong, you can apply for a visa to make the trip. For business trips you need to apply for a Hong Kong/Macau Travel Permit from an office of Public Security (with you National ID card). If you're going to visit Hong Kong as part of a tourist group, the travel agency should be able to get you the needed permit. In certain cities (mostly in Guangdong, an individual can also apply for a permit to tour Hong Kong).
