Q: What do you recommend travelling from Shanghai to Xiamen - flying, go by train or go by bus? How long does each trip take - and how much does it cost? Thank you!
A: The distance between Shanghai and Xiamen, by railway, is 1,300 kilometers (over 800 miles). There are long distance bus service between the two cities, but the distance is a little too far to travel comfortably. Train seems to be better this way and more predictable. By train from Shanghai to Xiamen it is a ride of about 27 hours: departure in the morning and arrival around noon next day. Should get a berth (hard or soft). A soft berth costs about 400 yuan. You can of course fly; flight time is about two hours and costs a little more than a train ride on a soft-berth.
