Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: How many miles are there between Beijing and Shenyang? What is the best way to travel between the two cities? Is there a train? What is the cost? Would it be safe for a young single woman from the United States to travel alone?
| | A: The distance between Beijing and Shenyang is approximately 500 miles (800 kilometers). You can either fly or travel by train. Train ride time is 7 to 10 hours, depending on which train you take. Avoid the really slow ones. Get yourself a soft seat or berth (a berth is bunker-kind of bed in a open-car; a soft berth is a self-enclosed cabin with four beds). Trains can be crowded, but it is safe to travel by train. One should, however, be alert; watch out for petty crimes such as pickpockets. Railway station is not a place to hang around for long. There are day time trains, leaving in the morning and arriving in the afternoon. If you fly, you can take an airport-operated shuttle bus or taxi to get in and out of cities. One way train ride, soft berth, costs about 300 Chinese dollars; flying costs more.
