Q: Can I travel from Haikou to Chongqing by train? How much does it cost and and how many times would I have to change trains?

A: There is a train that goes from Zhanjiang to Chongqing. Zhanjiang is the city across the sea from Haikou. You board this train in Zhanjiang, there is no need to make a connection. This is, however, a slow train and is not air conditioned (no cooling). The trip is going to last 33 hours. A soft berth costs about 300 yuan. Distance covered: 1,500 kilometers.

Another possibility is that instead of first going to Zhanjiang, you board train in Haikou and go to Guangzhou on it. This is a ride of about four hours. There are several trains that go from Guangzhou to Chongqing. These are nicer trains but travel time between Guangzhou and Chongqing is also over 30 hours. A soft berth on this leg of the trip costs about 500 yuan. Distance covered is 2,000 kilometers plus the 300 kilometers from Haikou to Guangzhou. You have to find a way to get the ticket in Guangzhou of course.
