Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: As a US citizen, can I cross the border to shop in the Luhou district, return the same day without a visa?
| | A: While a U.S. citizen can stay in Hong Kong for up to 90 days without visa, he needs a visa to enter mainland China (Lo Wu or Luohu is the border check point and the first stopping mainland China). If he's touring Shenzhen as a member of a tour group from Hong Kong, he can go and stay for seven days with no visa. Need to contact tour operators about this.
Visa can be easily secured in Hong Kong, either from Chinese consulate office there or from the local offices of China Travel Service in Hong Kong (China Travel Service is China's semi-official tour company) . You can get the visa on the same day or the next day. Remember that there is a difference between visa for single entry and multiple entry - the former means that you can enter China once - if you need to go back, you need to have another visa.
