Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Are we able to travel by train to Shanghai from Hong Kong. How long will it take. Is it better to fly to Shanghai from Hong Kong?

A: You can travel from Hong Kong to Shanghai by train. The train ride lasts about 24 hours. You depart in the afternoon and arrive in the afternoon the next day. A soft sleeper for an adult costs about 800 HK dollars and a hard sleeper 500. One advantage is you get to see some landscape on the way - except the night time ride of course and the fact that views along the railway tracks are not the nicest that China has to offer (they built the railway through it, didn't they). But you do get to see a few things - some hills, villages, rice paddies, towns, shantytows, whatever. The train ride is also cheaper than flying. But it is a long ride for you to be confined to a relatively small place, so it really depends on your particular needs and considerations. You may think, for instance, given one day's time, I could have seeb some more notable sites. On the other hand, if you're on a leisurely schedule, what's a day? If fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai and go back by train, the train trip is all right, but don't you pay a bit more with your one-way flight than one a return flight? On the other hand, with the savings with the train trip, you may still come out even or better off. Check with airlines.
