Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: How long does it take to travel between Wuhan and Qingdao by train? by car? by boat?

A: Wuhan is located in the heart of China and is the capital of Hubei Province. Qingdao is located on the tip of the Shandong peninsula, on the coast. You can travel between the two cities by train and plane. Boat is not an option. Not sure if there is long distance bus service, but given the distance, it would not be a good idea, especially for a foreign traveler. If you go by train, travel times is approximately 20 hours. Need to get a sleeper, obviously. The distance is about 1,600 kilometers. You can also fly between Wuhan and Qingdao. Flight time is about one and a half hour.

There are couple train stations in Wuhan. The ones that go to Qingdao depart at Wuchang station. Wuhan is consisted of Wuchang, Hanyang, and Hankou, separated by two rivers, Yangzi (Yangtze) River and Han River. The city is a major industrial and transportation center. Wuhan has a polulation of 8 million. Weather-wise, it is very hot and humid in Wuhan during summer times. Qingdao, located is a resort kind of place. The city, along with its surrounding area, has a population of 7 million. The city was started by the Germans in the early 20th century as a colony. There are still quite a bit Western-style architecture from that era. And of course Tsingtao Beer, which many overseas Chinese restaurants serve, is produced there.
