Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: What is the distance from Hong Kong to Chongqing? Where exactly is Chongqing?
| | A: Chongqing is located on the upper stretch of the Yangzi (Yangtse) River. It used to be part of the Sichuan Province, but a few years ago it was separated from the province and turned into a municipality that answers directly to the central government(there are four cities of this status - Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and now Chongqing). Chongqing is one of the largest cities in China, and the construction of the Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir on the Yangtze River has further enhanced its importance. A Three Gorges cruise and tour often starts in Chongqing; travelers would flow downstream to Yichang or Wwuhan. Chongqing is located at the joining point of Yangzi River and Jialing River and is quite hilly (that's probably why you don't see a whole lot people riding bicycles, unlike in some other Chinese cities). The metropolitan area of the city has a population of approximately seven million.
The distance between Hong Kong and Chongqing is about 2,300 kilometers (1,380) miles. This is if you go by rail. There is no direct train link between Hong Kong and Chongqing, however, and you need to travel to Guangzhou first and then go from there. Travel time is about 30 hours. There are flights between the two cities, and flight time is about two hours.
Chongqing means “double celebration,” which refers to some historical event involving a prince who was based in the area.
