Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: Do I need a visa to change planes in China en route to Bangkok?
| | A: Travelers from most countries do not nee to have a visa to transit through China directly if their stay is shorter than 24 hours and if they stay within the airport. This treatment, however, does not apply to citizens of the United States and Great Britian (probably due to these countries border control rules with regard to Chinese citizens). In the case of U.S. citizens, the rule does apply if the city they transit through is Shanghai. One should, of course, look into this and double check before setting on one's trip.
With regard to Shanghai, citizens of certain countries who transit through Pudong Airport and Hongqiao Airport can stay in the city of Shanghai for up to 48 hours without a visa. To do this they need to valid passport, plane ticket to go on to the next destination, and the visa to enter the country they're traveling to. Countries covered by this transit rule are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, and the United States.
