Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: How do I get a visa for shangai? I'm in UK.

A: You can apply for a visa to enter China at a Chinese consulate that is nearest to you. With that visa you can travel around in China, incluing Shanghai. China visa can also be obtained in Hong Kong, if that's where you arrive and if you decide to apply for your visa upon your arrival. Generally do not expect to enter Chna proper without a visa.

For citizens of certain countries who transit through (make a flight connection at) the Pudong or Hongqiao airports in Shanghai, no visa is required if the stay in the city is shorter than 48 hours. The Unite Kingdom, however, does not seem to be one of these countries (Japan, Republic of Korea, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Greece).

When apply for your visa, get the type of visa appropriate for your stay in China. For instance, if you travel as a tourist, a tourist visa (L) will get you up to 30 days in China.
