Q: Could you please provide Chinese addresses for Waigaoqiao dock and Huishan dock in Shanghai so that I can give them to a taxi driver to take me there. I wish to meet my friend arriving in Shanghai from a cruise ship. Thanks.
| | A: Waigaoqiao dock is located on the Western edge of Pudong Disctrict of Shanghai, on the bank of Yangzi River. Some large cruise ships dock there because terminals inside Shanghai, on the banks of Huangpu River, which flows through Shanghai, are too small for these ships. Waigaoqiao dock is about 25 kilometers from downtown Shanghai (the Bund). Not knowing specifically which part of the dock the ship will be, you may mention cruise ship to your taxi driver. Waigaoqiao dock is well-known in Shanghai, so taxi drivers should know how to get there.

Huishan dock is located in the heart of Shanghai, a short distance from the Bund and across Huangpu River from the new Pudong Finance District (the skyline of which nowadays often appears in images of Shanghai). There were news late last year (2006) that Huishan Passenger Terminal was closing down because a new terminal nearby was constructed (Shanghai Port International Passenger Terminal). You should verify the current status of the terminals. The two sites are close to each other, you should not be far off if that's where you decide to go.
