Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: From which bus station in Shangai do buses depart for Huangshan? Do they go to HuangShan town (Tunxi) or directly to the mountain (Tangkou)?

A: It is about 470 kilometers from Shanghai to Huangshan City (Tunxi). You should be able to find the buses at Shanghai Long Distance Bus Station (Shanghai Changtu Qiche Zong Zhan), which is located at the North Square of the Shanghai Railway Station (Shanghai Huoche Zhan Bei Guangchang). From Tunxi to Huangshan scenic area it is a bus ride of about one hour to one hour thirty minutes, depending on which entrance you're headed. You can take bus (mini vans) or hire a vehicle and a driver for yourself, which evidently requires some experience in China and Chinese language skills to arrange. In Shanghai there are tour operators that organize tours of Huangshan Mountain, which, for a little more money, would save you from the hassles of figuring out transportation and accommodation yourself. If you want to tour just Mount Huang, a two-day should do. If you are also interested in seeing a couple of fairly well-known villages featuring traditional style Chinese architecture, you may want to do a three-day tour. In any event, if you want to go about it yourself and plan to spend a night up in the mountains, you should make arrangements in advance, as it may be difficult to find vacancies, especially on weekends (room rates may go up by 60% on weekends). Also, be mindful of the weather. Temperature up in the Yellow Mountains is lower than that below, sometimes by 8 degrees (centigrade). It often rains or is foggy up in the mountains. Some people say do not use an umbrella but use a raincoat instead, since it is difficult to climb the mountainside with an umbrella in hand, and it is feared tat the metal in the umbrella may be a safety-hazard in a thunder storm.
