Answer to One China Travel Question

Q: Please can you tell me the cheapest way to get from Hong Kong Int. Airport to Zhaoqing? Also, please can you tell me the best place to buy a visa? (There are four of us travelling altogether and we are staying for 2 weeks, visiting my brother) Many Thanks.

A: You can take train to get from Hong Kong to Zhaoqing. Use local transportation to get from Hong Kong International Airport to Hung Hom station of the Canton-Kowloon Railway, which is located in Kowloon, and then get on the train that runs from Hong Hom to Zhaoqing. Travel time from Hong Hom to Zhaoqing is approximately four hours, and fare is about 235 Hong Kong dolalrs per adult, and 117 HK dollars per child.

Since you and your friends have two weeks to spend in China, you need to plan ahead to make the best of use of your time while out there, which cities to visit, for how long, etc. Be mindful that traveling in China can be complicated and unpredictable, so one should be careful not to get stuck at one place and waste precious time. Unless you or your relative that would be visiting know China very well, you may want to consider a packaged tour by a professional agency, either based in your own country or based in China. Since you have five persons or so in your party, it is possible that some travel agency can tailor-make a tour just for your group, with an itinerary customized for you and your own tour guide. If you do it right, you may get an escorted tour that does not cost you a fortune.

As for visa, there are a number of ways to obtain them. You can apply directly at a Chinese consulate that is closest to you. You need to show up in person with your passports and other requirement documents. Or you can entrust matter to a travel agency or visa service company, which will apply on your behalf. They charge a fee for the service, of course. Lastly, you can apply in Hong Kong after you have arrived there. If you work through a branch office of the China Travel Service in Hong Hong, which is a semi-official China travel agency, there is also a fee. You may get your visa through them in one to three days, depending whether you want to rush you service or not. But of course, if you have time, you’d have peace of mind if you have secured your visa back in UK before you set out for Hong Kong.
