Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I'm traveling to Mongolia in July and I'll transit to Beiging for 7 hours. How much US dollars will it cost to get a taxi to the Great Wall of China? Can i also take my laptop with me?
| | A: Normally people would give it day to visit the Great Wall and the Ming Tombs nearby. You're cutting it really close if you have only seven hours at Beijing Airport before you travl on. We don't know if you can make it. Have you considered the time to get in and out of the airport, to hire a cab, traffic on the road, and the time needed to get up and down the Great Wall? Also, do you have visa to visit China? To get in and out of airport, you'll be going through the border control. Citizens of certain countries who transit through Pudong International Airport in Shanghai can stay in the city without visa for a certain amount of time; not sure about Beijing.
In any event, for your information, there are three sections of the Great Wall that tourists visit: Badaling, Mutianyu, and Simatai. Both Badaling Great Wall and Simatai Great Wall are about 80 km (50 miles) away from Beijing International Airport. The distance beteen Mutianyu Great Wall and Beijing Airport is about 45 km (30 miles). It takes about 100 Chinese dollars or so to cover 45 kilometers. Also expect to pay more if it's one way long distance. If it's round-trip, expect to pay the taxi driver's waiting time. So it may take some negotiation to arrange a trip like this.
But, as noted above, with just seven hours in Beijing, it is difficult for you to visit the Great Wall.
By the way, Beijing International Airport is about 30 km (20 miles) from the Imperial Forbidden City, which is located in central Beijing.
In any event, double check on information provided here and plan carefully so that you do not miss your flight.
You should have no problem bringing your own laptop into China.
