Answer to One China Travel Question
|
| | Q: I understand I do not need a visa to enter Hong Kong from the U.S. Can I obtain a visa in Hong Kong to visit mainland China?
| | A: Yes, while in Hong Kong you can apply for a visa to enter mainland China. You can apply at the Hong Kong office of China's foreign ministry. If you're traveling to China as a tourist, you can also apply through an agency such as China Travel Service, which has a number of branch offices in Hong Kong. The service fee may range from 500 to 1,000 Hong Kong dollars. You need to have a photograph of yourself and your passports needs to have at least three months on your passport before its expiration date. If you ask for rush service, you may get your visa on the same business day, but it is advisable that you give it three days to be on the safe side.
In the United States, apply for your China visa at the Chinese consulate general that is closest to you.
Also be mindful of the fact that as a U.S. citizen you can visit Hong Kong without a visa, but only up to 90 days.
